Student Spotlight: Jason Jones

1. Did you train BJJ prior to coming to GGBJJ? If so where, and for how long?

No (I hardly even knew what BJJ was prior to coming to Jeremy)

2. What sports have you played prior to joining GGBJJ?

Rugby in college, but my big claim to fame was that when I was much younger I ran the mile with a PR of 4:57.

3. Why did you decide to begin training BJJ?

My son Daniel was really the one that sparked this. We are active in Boy Scouts and we have a high adventure trip to the Florida Sea Base coming up in June of 2013. According to the BSA physical, I’m suppose to be no heavier than 226 lbs by the time of this trip. I need to lose a lot of weight in over 1 year. Since my time as a runner 20 years ago i’ve been on a slow steady climb in weight. I needed to get off my butt and do something. Once I met Jeremy I knew that I had stumbled onto someone special.

4. What are your training goals?

Primarily I want to lose a pile of weight. Minimally I want to get to 226 lbs by June 1 2013. As a secondary goal I’m beginning to think that a competition is in my future.

5. How has grappling improved your life?

I’ve been introduced to the concept of 800 mg of NSAID. Since joining GGBJJ I’ve only been to a chiropractor once. About the time that I started training I was having trouble sleeping through the night due to lower back pain. Since I’ve started training the lower back pain has subsided substantially and I sleep through the night now. I’m down over 50 lbs already with more to go.

6. What do you do for a living?

I am an Advisory Technical Consultant in the Backup Recovery Solutions division at EMC. I help my sales rep sell solution that eliminate backup tape from the datacenter. My territory is western North Carolina and all of South Carolina targeted to small and medium businesses – but I have a couple of super large companies that I work with in South Carolina too. Lately I’ve been spending a lot of time in Columbia SC where a number of my larger customers are located. I also perform at some public speaking engagements related to my industry.

7. What are your hobbies outside of BJJ?

Remote controlled airplanes, I am an Assistant Scout Master at a Boy Scout Troop, and I am an active member of the Rock Hill High School Band Booster Club during marching season.

8. Is there anything else you’d like to share? Fun facts? Thanks to family/friends/pets?

Crossfit does not suck and for me is a great compliment to GGBJJ.
